Comparing Evil Dead Rise and Evil Death (2013)

Evil Death Rise
tells the story of Ellie, a mother of three : Bridget, Danny, and Kassie who lives in an old apartment. One day, her sister Beth comes to visit. After an earthquake hits, things start to go downhill fast when the Book of the Dead incantation found beneath the apartment is played, the cold and silent place turns red, drenched in screams. The mother becomes possessed, transforming into a Deadite, and begins attacking her own children. Beth must find a way to get her nieces and nephews out before it’s too late. One terrifying event after another, non-stop. It’s pure chaos, no breathing room at all. The mom? Totally insane… creepy as hell.

The downside is that it’s "too" scary, like, there’s no break. After a while, it becomes a bit too much, and you kinda get used to. Still scary, but you grow immune to it.

It’s like riding a roller coaster that slowly climbs up, then drops straight down at full speed again and again until it finally stops. That’s it.

Because of that intense, non-stop horror, the 1 hour 39 minutes runtime feels pretty fast. Not a flop

though — still worth watching. The king of gore, slasher, whatever you wanna call it.

Oh, and the switch of setting from a cabin in the woods (Evil Dead 2013) to a rundown apartment that’s about to be demolished (Evil Dead Rise)? Brilliant idea. The horror feels more intense because the space is smaller and more claustrophobic.

For me, the Evil Dead franchise keeps escalating its madness and brutality in the best way possible. There are a few scenes that pay homage to the previous Evil Dead films like the classic eyeball-popping moment that flies straight into someone’s mouth.

So yeah, what do you even expect from a horror movie if not pure terror? You don’t need a long, complicated story and this movie proves it. But if you want something with a bit more plot, the 2013 Evil Dead still does it better.
