"Because you asked me to,"
Johnny plays Edward, a half-finished creation whose fingers are literally giant scissors. Winona plays Kim, the teenage daughter of Peg, a kind-hearted women that found Edward on the secret labs and decides to take him in. They live under the same roof, but Edward is way too shy to even talk to Kim, let alone confess how he feels.
Kim already has a boyfriend named Jim — your typical macho jerk who loves bullying Edward every chance he gets.
One day, Jim comes up with a sneaky plan. He convinces Kim to help him trick Edward into breaking into an empty house. Of course, it’s a setup, the house actually belongs to Jim himself and is wired with an alarm connected straight to the police. Poor Edward gets caught red-handed and thrown in jail.
After he’s released, Edward returns home and meets Kim again. This time, Kim admits she regrets being part of the setup and starts to show genuine care for him. And then comes that emotional scene, the one that completely wrecked me.
Kim: It must have been awful when they told you whose house it was.
Edward: I knew it was Jim's house.
Kim: You... you did?
Edward: Yes.
Kim: ...Well, then why'd you do it?
Edward: Because you asked me to.
If this story were told today, Edward’s kind of love would probably get labeled as “simp” behavior by kid's nowadays standards.
But let’s not forget the context behind who Edward really is.
He was “born” and raised in an isolated tower on a hill, basically a secret lab belonging to a lonely, eccentric inventor who created him. So, when Edward finally steps into the modern world, it’s no surprise that he’s awkward, anxious, and completely lost in social situations. With his strange appearance and scissor hands, people see him as nothing but a freak.
Yet, his feelings for Kim are genuine. Edward might not know how to say “I love you” or “I miss you,” let alone write her a romantic poem.
So, the only way he knows how to express his love is by doing whatever she asks — no matter how big, how reckless, or how dangerous it might be.
So, “Because you asked me to” — for me, that line is such a pure and simple expression of love. It’s honest, it’s innocent, and yet it carries so much depth.
It’s the kind of quiet, understated romance that speaks louder than a thousand flowery words.
And who knows? Maybe, in some subtle way, it also reflected how Johnny Depp actually felt toward Winona Ryder at the time…
